MASSACIUCCOLI LAKE

Massaciuccoli Lake is a coastal lake in Tuscany. The lake and the surrounding marshland area are part of the Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli Natural Park and of a LIPU oasis, given the numerous bird species present.

At the end of the 19th century, the Lucchese musician Giacomo Puccini bought a tower house, on the west bank of the basin. The property was converted into an elegant villa and became the maestro's favourite place of residence.

Today Puccini is buried in the chapel of the house, and the town was renamed Torre del Lago Puccini, a hamlet of Viareggio, in his honour. The lake was also one of the subjects most often portrayed by some of the exponents of Macchiaioli and post-Macchiaioli painting, such as Cabianca, Pagni and above all the Tommasi brothers
