FORTE DEI MARMI

Forte dei Marmi is the main luxury resort in the Versilia Riviera.

It was founded in the 15th century as a port for the transfer of Carrara marble. Starting from the 16th century, with the flourishing of the Renaissance, the territory, under the dependence of Pietrasanta, was enlarged and the roads were improved, thanks also to the greater importance acquired with the increase in the commercialisation of iron from the Island of Elba.

It was born as an exclusive tourist resort only in 1800, when on the Riviera Viareggio was becoming one of the most fashionable seaside towns, destination of the first tourists. Forte dei Marmi, thanks to its natural beauty, surrounded by greenery and overlooking the sea, began to attract a more exclusive tourism, both Italian and foreign, becoming the ideal holiday destination for many VIPs: politicians, great industrialists, nobles, artists and intellectuals. Today it retains its reputation as a luxury resort, having made luxury its distinctive identity.
