APUAN ALPS

The Apuan Alps are a mountain range located in the north-west of Tuscany, forming part of the Tuscan Sub-Apennines and bordered to the north-west by the Magra River (Lunigiana), to the east by the Serchio River (Garfagnana, Mediavalle and Piana di Lucca) and to the southwest by the Versilia and the Apuan Riviera, affecting part of the territory of the provinces of Lucca, Massa-Carrara, La Spezia and Pisa.

The area corresponding to their basin is historically known by the toponym Apuania.

In 1985 the ”Regional Natural Park of the Apuan Alps” was established, a protected natural area that has been under UNESCO protection since 2012.
